Beginning Monday, July 28, at 7 a.m., traffic will be shifted to the west side of State Highway (SH) 133 in Carbondale between Colorado Avenue and Dolores Way to allow for the continued reconstruction of the highway.
The highway will remain open during this switch, but access to Nieslanik Avenue, La Fontana Plaza, Industry Place, the Roaring Fork Co-op and ET Plaza will be restricted from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Motorists may not turn off SH 133 at these points. Moderate delays are expected.
All businesses will have access during this time, but many access points will be altered from their current configuration to allow for construction activities. Construction of the accesses on July 28 is expected to last until 5 p.m.
The Crystal River Trail will be temporarily closed between Colorado Avenue and La Fontana Plaza. The west side trail will be opened to take its place in this section. Existing pedestrian business access also will be closed. Pedestrians are encouraged to use caution while traveling adjacent to the project.
Pedestrians should use the following detours:
- Pedestrians traveling north along SH 133 and whose destinations may include Cowen Drive, Village Way, State Highway 82, RFTA’s BRT Station and Red Hill: Use Colorado Avenue to access the recently constructed west side trail along SH 133.
- Pedestrians traveling south along SH 133 and whose destinations may include City Market, Sopris Shopping Center, 7 Eleven and Carbondale Plaza: Use Village Way to access the recently constructed west side trail along SH 133.
- Pedestrians traveling south along SH 133 and whose destinations may include Downtown Carbondale or businesses located on Industry Place and La Fontana Plaza: Use the Rio Grande Trail.
- Pedestrians traveling to businesses located on Nieslanik Avenue: Use Colorado Avenue and 12th Street.
Construction began May 2014, and is expected to be completed by November 14, 2014. Normal working hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Weekend work is anticipated at this time. Scheduled work is dependent on weather and workload.
The lane shift marks the beginning of the third phase of the project, which includes the reconstruction of the east side of SH 133 between La Fontana Plaza and Colorado Avenue, and construction of the west half of the roundabout at SH 133 and Main Street.
